The route from the Balos Lagoon to Cape Vouxa is a walk to the very edge of land and silence. A stony path winds through thorny shrubs and sun-scorched rock, leading steadily away from the bustle of the beach and toward the horizon. To the left, the lagoon glimmers like a mirror; to the right, the open sea stretches out, darker and deeper. With every step, there are fewer people, fewer sounds — only the wind and the traces of kri-kri goats. Each step becomes more intimate, as if the landscape gives back only what you are ready to receive. At the end of the path, the headland breaks off abruptly and dramatically — a cliff, silence, and a view that needs no words. It is a place to sit, draw breath, and feel a boundary — not only a geographical one, but a personal one as well.
Description
The route from the Balos Lagoon to Cape Vouxa begins near the lower descent from the main trail leading down from the parking area above Balos. Access to the starting point is possible only via an unpaved road through Kaliviani — about 8 km of rough, stony gravel road with limited parking options. Parking is paid and unsupervised; fees are collected at the entrance (approximately 1–2 EUR per person).
The trail to Cape Vouxa is unmarked, narrow, and in places runs close to steep slopes and cliffs. The route is about 10.3 km round trip and is not secured. There is no infrastructure: no toilets, drinking water, shade, safety barriers, or medical points. Mobile phone coverage is absent.
Hazards include loose stones, steep sections, intense sun exposure, and strong winds. Trekking footwear, head protection, sunscreen, and an adequate supply of water are recommended. The route is not suitable for elderly people, those with cardiac conditions, limited mobility, or small children. Good physical condition, caution, and prior familiarity with the route are required. An early start is recommended in order to avoid the strongest heat.
