Glyka Nera Beach – Hora Sfakion, Chania
Glyka Nera Beach, meaning “Sweet Waters,” is one of the most remarkable beaches in Crete — its name comes from the freshwater springs that rise beneath the sand right at the shoreline. Set at the foot of monumental cliffs, it is accessible only on foot or by boat. The crystal-clear water, the contrast of rock and blue sea, and the enveloping silence give the place an almost mystical character.
Description
Glyka Nera lies in the heart of Sfakia, a region known for its wild nature and the untamed spirit of its people. The water that flows from beneath the stones and cools the sand even in mid-summer is so pure that locals drink it straight from the ground. Tamarisk trees grow along the beach, offering shade and relief after the long descent from the cliffside E4 trail connecting Chora Sfakion with Loutro.
A small bar built into the rocks serves fresh juice and coffee — the only trace of civilization within several kilometers. The sea near the shore remains cool even in the heat, as it mixes with water from the mountain springs, and its color — from pale turquoise to deep blue — shifts throughout the day.
According to local legends, this is where fugitives and smugglers once hid in the shadow of the cliffs, making use of the natural caves. Today, Glyka Nera attracts travelers seeking quiet and simplicity — those who want to dive into the sea, drink the sweet water, and for a moment feel what true Crete tastes like.
