Gouverneto Monastery – Chania, Chania

Gouverneto Monastery, also known as the Monastery of Our Lady of the Angels, is one of the oldest sacred sites on Crete. It is located on the Akrotiri peninsula, about 19 kilometers northeast of Chania. Built in 1537, the monastery resembles a Venetian fortress with four corner towers and a stark stone façade decorated with carvings of fantastical creatures. Surrounded by a wild landscape overlooking the Avlaki Gorge, the monastery radiates calm and spirituality. Inside, there is a small museum displaying icons and relics. A rocky path leads from the monastery to the abandoned Katholiko Monastery and the Arkoudospilios Cave. Gouverneto is a place where time seems to stand still, offering visitors a moment of reflection and a tangible connection with history.
