Katholiko Monastery – Chania, Chania
Katholiko Monastery is one of the most secluded and fascinating places on Crete. Situated in the Avlaki Gorge on the Akrotiri peninsula, it is considered the oldest monastery on the island, dating back to the eleventh century. Founded by Saint John the Hermit, who lived in a nearby cave, the monastery was abandoned in the seventeenth century due to pirate raids. Access is possible by car to Gouverneto Monastery, from which a rocky path descends into the gorge. The hike takes about 30–40 minutes one way and is not suitable for people with limited mobility, children, or the elderly. There are no tourist facilities on site, such as toilets or food services. Along the route to Katholiko, visitors pass the Arkoudospilios cave with its characteristic bear-shaped stalagmite, as well as the abandoned Monastery of Saint Anthony. The Katholiko complex impresses with its monumental bridge spanning the gorge, the monks’ cells carved into the rock, and the chapel built into a natural cave. For many visitors, this place offers not only a journey back in time but also a deeply spiritual experience far from the noise of tourist routes.
Description
Katholiko Monastery, regarded as the oldest monastery on Crete, is located on the northern coast of the Akrotiri peninsula, about 20 kilometers from Chania. You can reach it by car as far as Gouverneto Monastery, where a small, free parking area is available. From there, the route continues on foot along a rocky path of approximately 2.8 kilometers, with an elevation change of around 164 meters.
The trail leads through the Avlaki Gorge, passing the Arkoudospilios cave and the abandoned Monastery of Saint Anthony. The path is in places steep and uneven, making it unsuitable for people with limited mobility, children, and the elderly. There are no tourist facilities: no toilets, no food services, and no access to drinking water. Proper footwear and sufficient water are recommended, and it is best to avoid the hike on very hot days.
Katholiko Monastery is abandoned and does not have official opening hours, but access depends on the opening hours of Gouverneto Monastery, through which the trail passes. Modest clothing is required at Gouverneto: shoulders and knees must be covered. Shawls and skirts are available for visitors. Photography and filming inside the church are prohibited.
For more experienced hikers, it is possible to continue from Katholiko Monastery down to Avlaki Bay, which takes an additional 30–45 minutes. This extension is more demanding, with loose stones and no safety measures, and is recommended only for those in good physical condition.
