Falasarna Beach – Άγιος Γεώργιος, Chania
Falasarna Beach is one of the most beautiful places in western Crete: a wide, sandy bay with turquoise water and an open view of the Libyan Sea. Located about fifteen kilometers west of Kissamos, it is famous for sunsets often considered the most spectacular on the island. Its fine, light sand and gently sloping seabed make it an ideal destination both for travelers and for locals seeking a peaceful escape.
Description
Falasarna occupies the site of the ancient port of the same name, which in the Hellenistic period was one of the most important trading centers of western Crete. The remains of the city walls, harbor, and acropolis can still be seen on the hills above the beach. Over the centuries the shoreline rose by several meters due to earthquakes, which is why the ancient waterfront now lies far inland.
The beach consists of several coves stretching for more than a kilometer. The best known is Pachia Ammos, with fine golden sand and crystal-clear water. Despite its popularity, Falasarna retains a natural character: it is surrounded by dunes, olive groves, and the ruins of old farmsteads. It is a place where a swim in the sea can be combined with a touch of history. A short walk up the hill reveals the foundations of the ancient city and the remains of its aqueduct.
In the summer months, small tavernas and water-sports rentals operate here, but after sunset Falasarna returns to its original calm. It is also a favorite spot for photographers and hikers who come to watch the sun sink into the sea, leaving a final golden glow on the sand – according to legend, a farewell kiss from Helios to western Crete.
